WORLD PREMIERE
30th November, 2017- 27th January, 2018
The Red Shoes by Hans Christian Andersen in a new version by Nancy Harris

Gate Studio Commission
Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales are universally read and loved by both children and adults alike but we rarely see these on stage. This new commission will bring together some of Ireland’s most celebrated artists and one of Denmark’s most famous fairytales.

An orphan girl, adopted by a wealthy Dublin family, is given a pair of beautiful red shoes. At first it appears her dreams have come true… but appearances can be very deceptive.

In a new version by Nancy Harris , The Red Shoes is a contemporary retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s extraordinary fairy- tale of dance, desire and destruction. Part theatre, part dance, this family Christmas show will dazzle your senses and break your heart.

Reviews

Superbly entertaining …[The Red Shoes] add up to an adult fantasy that can well double as a rough-cast moral kick in the pants”
Sunday Independent

“…A roistering, witty cross between scarifying satire, pantomime, Little Orphan Annie and Cinderella with a touch of The Wizard of Oz”
Irish Mail on Sunday
⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Selina Cartmell directs with stylish verve…[The Red Shoes] darkness has been retained, but mixed with much hilarity. There is plenty of meat in this Christmas confection.”
The Independent

“The Red Shoes has an unusual and mischievous heart, richly packaged in an elegant parcel”
No More Workhorse

“A freestyle approach to a dark and charming fairytale… In the Gate’s dark Christmas spectacle, a bold retelling tries on an old fairytale for size.”
The Irish Times
