PROGRAMME DETAILS
by Billy Roche
Set in an old fashioned Wexford betting shop on the weekend leading up to the All Ireland Hurling Final, Danger Doyle returns to town to face all those left behind - Joe, his old sidekick; Molly, his old flame; Steven, whose wife he ran away with and Eileen her abandoned daughter.
Passions run high as old wounds re-open, scores are settled and fragile truces torn asunder.
Heaped with awards upon its premiere in London, the hilarious and lacerating Poor Beast in the Rain will be directed by Conor McPherson, who returns to The Gate following the huge success of his play Shining City in 2004.
Poor Beast in the Rain is part of Billy Roche’s The Wexford Trilogy, his modern classic which tells three separate but related tales of small-town life in Ireland. When it premiered in London, The Guardian said “Roche is a natural dramatist who writes with compassionate wit and an uncanny feeling for mood and atmosphere”
