The Gate Theatre Production of
All My Sons
by Arthur Miller
"best play of the year" NY Times
The Gate Theatre is delighted to announce that Canadian stage and screen veteran Len Cariou will play the lead role of Joe Keller in the forthcoming production of Arthur Miller's classic All My Sons. His first appearance on an Irish stage, the Tony Award winning actor is particularly well-known for his legendary performance as the lead in the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with Angela Lansbury, as well as the films About Schmidt, The Four Seasons, Executive Decision, and Thirteen Days. Other notable appearances include The West Wing, Law & Order, Star Trek: Voyager, The Practice, and multiple episodes of Murder, She Wrote.
The Gate has also brought together a stellar cast for this production, under the direction of Robin Lefèvre, including Barbara Brennan, Donna Dent, Peter Gaynor, Mary Kelly, Ronan Leahy, Garrett Lombard, Niamh McCann and Mark O'Regan, with design by Liz Ascroft and lighting by Mick Hughes.
All My Sons was the first great success of Arthur Miller's supremely influential career and the play that launched him as one of the leading dramatists of the twentieth century. With a career that spanned over 50 years, Miller's probing dramas, which include Death of a Salesman, The Crucible and A View from the Bridge, transformed American Theatre and proved to be both the conscience and redemption of the times. In the aftermath of World War II, two families struggle to come to terms with the brutal reality of what they have lost and gained. The confrontations that ensue lead to the uncovering of a shameful family secret. Provocative and heart-breaking, All My Sons is a compelling story of love, guilt and the corrupting power of greed.
All My Sons opened on Broadway in January, 1947 and ran for a staggering 328 performances. Directed by Elia Kazan, to whom it is dedicated, it received the two most prestigious awards in theatre, the Tony Award for Best Authored Play and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, famously beating Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh. It starred Ed Begley, Beth Miller, Arthur Kennedy, and Karl Malden. The criticism of the American Dream, which lies at the heart of All My Sons, was the main reason why Arthur Miller was called to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee during the 1950s, when America was gripped by anti-communist hysteria. Miller sent a copy of the play to Kazan, a former member of the Communist Party who shared Miller's left-wing views. However, their relationship was destroyed forever when Kazan, notoriously and unapologetically, later 'named names' of suspected Communists to the House Un-American Activities Committee.
