![]() Since its completion in 2009, the Gate Lab is fast becoming a significant force within the Gate Theatre and the theatre community at large. Not only does it function as the primary rehearsal space for Gate productions, but it is a creative hub with a multifunctional role. Indeed, it is a place in which to workshop developmental projects; to examine texts through rehearsed readings or to showcase new writing through our Fair Play series. Equally, it is a venue available for hire and has been used to launch exciting initiatives such as the Edinburgh Festival and Culture Ireland’s Imagine Ireland programme. The Gate Lab is therefore, a meeting place in which to engage and nurture new talent while providing support and training for existing talent. In the coming months we have programmed a number of structured workshops by leading practitioners including a one day practical session on audition technique by casting director Maureen Hughes. In addition, we follow on from the successes made in 2009, with another Director’s Symposium as part of the 2011 Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival. The symposium offers both emerging and mid-career directors the invaluable opportunity to engage with leading Irish and international actors, designers, directors, playwrights and producers. The success of which, has been widely recognised and many of the participants have developed significant relationships with the Gate. The Lab has been used by a range of artists including companies such as Fishamble Theatre Company, Landmark Productions, Pan Pan Theatre Company, Second Age, Irish Modern Dance Theatre, The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and many more independent actors, writers and directors. In recent months, the Lab has developed another new facet within the theatre-going community by providing a hugely successful programme of FREE pre-show talks and public interviews. Talks take place on a weekly basis Tuesday-Thursday at 6.30pm and are free but ticketed. For information see www.gate-theatre.ie or call our box office on Ph.8744045. Throughout 2011, we will continue to identify new artists with whom we would like to collaborate and hope to expand on the new audiences we have welcomed into the Gate Lab.
