The Gate Theatre and The Brian Friel Trust are proud to announce a special matinee gala performance of

DANCING AT LUGHNASA
by Brian Friel

ABOUT

The Gate Theatre and the Brian Friel Trust are proud to announce a very special gala performance of DANCING AT LUGHNASA by Brian Friel, at the Gate Theatre on Sunday 25th August at 2pm. This is a fundraising event in aid of the Brian Friel Trust.

The proceeds raised will support the opening of THE BRIAN FRIEL CENTRE in the courthouse in Glenties, Co Donegal, along with the renovation of THE LAURELS, the former home of Friel’s aunts that provided the inspiration for Dancing at Lughnasa.

Tickets for this fundraising gala performance are priced at €100 each excluding booking fee.

The Trust has already made a significant start in realising its dream of The Brian Friel Centre by securing a long-term lease of the courthouse in Glenties, and by purchasing and beginning the renovation of The Laurels cottage. The Trust is now inviting the public to support this project as it enters its next exciting phase.

By supporting the gala performance of this critically acclaimed production on the 25th August, participants are given the opportunity to be part of a dynamic, forward-looking project that both honours one of Ireland’s greatest playwrights and secures an innovative cultural future for that part of Donegal which shaped his imagination.

The performance will be followed by a silent auction in the Gate Bar, which will see the radio from the original production of Lughnasa, an original artwork of The Laurels by Donegal artist John Boyle, and signed memorabilia go under the hammer.

Book tickets via the Gate Box Office on +353 1 8744045

INFORMATION

THE LAURELS:

When Dancing at Lughnasa took the theatre world by storm in 1990, the setting was the home of the Mundy sisters in Ballybeg, in 1936. The Laurels Cottage was the playwright’s inspiration. This refurbishment project will see The Laurels restored, renovated and reimagined in authentic period style. Visitors will have an opportunity to experience Ireland of the 1930s as part of their engagement with the work of one of Ireland’s greatest writers. The gardens surrounding the cottage, an oasis for reflection and relaxation, will be an integral part of the project.

THE COURTHOUSE:

Situated in the centre of Glenties, the Courthouse will be transformed into a dynamic cultural space, a place of creativity and community, bringing to life the work of Brian Friel and exploring the arts more broadly. Exhibitions, performances, arts programmes, community events and youth activities can thrive in this imaginatively renovated historic building and its beautiful courtyard.
