SIDE by SIDE | The Children & Beginning

Selina Cartmell’s Love and Courage season at the Gate kicks off in 2019 with a double act of international drama. First up is Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children starring Marie Mullen, Sean McGinley and Ger Ryan in the story of a retired married couple facing their past in a time of disastrous climate change. This will be followed by David Eldridge’s Beginning with Marty Rea and Eileen Walsh portraying a couple in the first fragile moments of potential love.

These two contemporary international dramas, presented SIDE By SIDE, will be directed by two of Ireland’s finest young directors Oonagh Murphy (The Children) and Marc Atkinson (Beginning). Both productions have the same design team with set design and costumes by Sarah Bacon, lighting by Sinead McKenna and sound design by Kevin Gleeson.

Olivier Award-winning playwright Lucy Kirkwood ‘tackles giant themes with a swaggering showmanship’ in The Children (The Telegraph).

Two retired nuclear scientists live in an isolated cottage by the sea as the world around them crumbles. The Children provokes questions about the responsibility each generation faces in leaving a better world for the next, balancing the stark realities of our times with intrigue and humour.

‘Writing Rose and Hazel was an attempt to look at the psychology of older women with a kind of depth that they don’t normally get tended to with’

David Eldridge’s sharp and astute two-hander Beginning takes an intimate look at the first fragile moments of risking your heart and taking a chance.  This tender and funny play is an (anti) romance for 21st Century life for two single people dealing with the challenges of connecting and sharing with ‘one of the funniest, most touching, and at times most enthralling-excruciating seduction scenes you’ll ever see on stage’ (Telegraph).

Director Marc Atkinson was Associate Director on Yaël Farber’s acclaimed production of Hamlet, Selina Cartmell’s Assassins and the 2017 & 2018 productions of The Great Gatsby. This is his debut production as a Director on the Gate stage.

‘I wanted to write about ..the courage it can take now when you get the opportunity to connect with someone in person, rather than on Tinder or Twitter…’
